Site Landing Page

There has been a bit of an email thread on the site redesign, so I'll just summarize here...

The site now has a landing page (make sure you are logged out and open http://star-tides.net) for anonymous users and a home page for those who are logged in.  The question is - What is the best combo of text and graphics to make the most impact?  The purpose of the landing page is to act as an intro/teaser that is less imposing than our standard home page.  So, we really need to apply the 80/20 rule on this effort (probably closer to 90/10).   That is to say, what is the top stuff we want to present to someone who is:

  • Just browsing for info
  • Might be looking to volunteer
  • What other cases do we need to cover?

Some considerations:

  • Not all visitors can see embedded media like YouTube
  • Should load quickly - eight seconds max is a good rule of thumb
  • All the good stuff needs to be above the fold (including a laptop/small screen)
  • What else?

I will be making revisions on the live site as I get feedback.

Please comment.

I like it.  Should we incorporate this text?

Incorporation of Text, Graphics, Video, etc.

All:

I apologize for the delay in chiming in.  It's amazing how quickly the world can just chomp down and try its hand at devouring whole parts of your soul. ;)  Now you get my two cents!

As for the existing landing page, the images in there seem a little... elementary.  I propose trying to come up with one good, polished image of a moderate size.  It might prove to be more aesthetically pleasing once you get the right balance there.

As for the text, it *is* good.  However, IMESHO, it's a little on the lengthy side for an initial jump.  While web design is not my forte by any stretch of the imagination, is it possible to put up some trailer text, perhaps?  Then you can follow it up with a 'Learn More...' sort of link to a full write up.  A little bit of intrigue to pique a reader's curiosity sometimes grabs their attention more effectively than a giant block of text that seeks to tell them everything at first glance. :)

thanks visionarydc.  i like

thanks visionarydc.  i like the idea of "learn more"  and we can change the images very easily.  still waiting to find some top notch stuff that tells our story.
